A new fit-for-purpose Sustainable Plumbing Centre enhancing Bendigo Kangan Institute’s capability to deliver programs to the building and construction industry. With funding secured from the Victorian Government, the project has enabled the co-location of TAFE’s plumbing courses at Broadmeadows to meet trade training demand in the Melbourne’s north and created an integrated ‘Trades Hub’ training and learning environment.
The project involved the refurbishment of Building J (The Hangar) to create contemporary teaching and learning spaces with the capacity to train an additional 300 plumbing students each year. The state-of-the-art facility provides workshops, classrooms and ‘sandpits’ for a simulated workplace environment creating sustainable trades practices that seek to reduce waste on building and construction sites. The refurbishment and fitout required the construction of a training tower and associated learning spaces including storerooms, welding bays, an informal student learning hub, a teaching and administration workspace, a staff breakout and social space, electrical labs and carpentry and plumbing training workstations.
