Kids Under Cover

Sector: Residential

Address: Metropolitan and regional Victoria

Client: Kids Under Cover

Duration: Ongoing since 2010

Since 2010, Harris HMC has been partnering with not-for-profit organisation Kids under Cover to support them in meeting their vision of a community where no young person experiences homelessness. It involves the construction, installation, relocation and maintenance of one and two bedroom studios with a bathroom in the backyards of the homes of carers or at-risk families.

These studios, or Dependent Persons Units (DPUs), support young people at risk of homelessness, families at risk of breakdown, and foster carers seeking more room to accommodate young people in their care. They provide a stable space for a young person to grow and study while keeping them connected to their family and reducing the risk of them being forced to leave home prematurely. With a life span of around 20 years, they can prevent up to 10 young people from becoming homeless.
