Housing the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE), The University of Melbourne was seeking to repurpose the level one car park within the iconic Kwong Lee Dow Building located in Queensberry Street, Carlton. A unique and transformational project, the new space needed to be able to provide 300 exam spaces for students that could easily be turned back into teaching spaces.

Live environment specialists and a long-term client of the University of Melbourne, Harris HMC was contracted to deliver the following scope of works:

  • Strip out of the existing space
  • Investigation/exploration of existing structure (no structural as-built drawings available)
  • Design, supply and installation of structural steel to enable creation of a void and support new vertical lift doors
  • Structural demolition of the existing concrete slab to create a void/courtyard area
  • New penetrations to the building’s envelope to facilitate new windows
  • New custom windows with reveals
  • New custom vertical lift bifold door
  • Specialist mechanical system and upgrade of the supply air for the entire building
  • Custom lighting designed by a specialist lighting consultant
  • Custom feature timber wall panels and bulkheads
  • Custom acoustic fabric bulkheads to noisy mechanical services
  • Custom timber joinery and furniture throughout the circulation spaces
  • State of the art wireless audio visual facilities.
